Kaua‘i Markets & Local Moments
Local. Free. Welcoming.
There’s a rhythm to life on Kaua‘i, one that doesn’t just follow the tides or trade winds, but the weekly and monthly gatherings where locals and visitors come together to connect, create, and celebrate. Whether it’s fresh fruit in the sunshine or a spontaneous conversation over rum tastings, these events are full of the island spirit and rooted in community.
Here are four local experiences I always recommend to anyone visiting Kaua‘i, and I still look forward to them myself, time and again.
Kōloa Rum Tastings at Kilohana
When: Tastings available Monday-Saturday (reserve ahead for best times)
Where: Kōloa Rum Company Store at Kilohana Plantation, Lihue
Tasting rum might sound like a quick stop, but at Kilohana, it’s so much more. This beautiful historic plantation offers a warm welcome, a bit of history, and the chance to sample some of Hawai‘i’s finest small-batch cane sugar rum. Tastings are hosted with aloha and a little humor (we don’t take ourselves too seriously), and you’ll learn what makes Kōloa Rum unique, from the rich vanilla notes in the dark rum to the crisp citrusy finish of the white.
Even better? I often get to be behind the bar, sharing recipe ideas and favorite ways to cook with rum. So if you stop by…say hi!
Waipā Farmers Market
When: Every Tuesday, 2:00 pm to dusk
Where: Waipā Foundation, just outside Hanalei
Set in one of the most stunning locations on the North Shore, the Waipā Farmers Market is peaceful, welcoming, and full of local treasures. From heirloom produce to tropical flowers and fresh poi, everything here is grown or made with care. There’s often live Hawaiian music playing, and the vibe is pure serenity, laid-back and deeply rooted in culture and sustainability.
Bring a tote bag and take your time. This is one of those places where you come for fruit and leave with a full heart.
Kapa‘a First Saturday Night Market
When: First Saturday of every month, 5:00 pm to 9 pm
Where: Old Kapa‘a Town (along Kūhiō Highway)
Once a month, Kapa‘a transforms into a lively night market filled with food trucks, handmade crafts, live music, and smiling faces. The streets close down, and the energy is infectious, locals and visitors alike stroll through town, enjoying plate lunches, tropical drinks, and artisan goods from some of the island’s most creative vendors.
It’s a fun, free way to experience the pulse of this eastside town. Come hungry, and wear comfy shoes…you’ll want to explore every corner.
Hanapēpē Friday Art Night
When: Every Friday, 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm
Where: Main Street, Hanapēpē
This charming westside town comes alive on Friday nights. Galleries open their doors, musicians play on the sidewalks, and food trucks line the road with everything from Thai plates to fresh poke and handmade desserts. You’ll find local artists, photographers, jewelers, and a welcoming vibe that feels like a community block party every week.
It’s casual, walkable, and filled with creativity, and if you’re lucky, you might catch a spontaneous hula or ukulele jam as the sun goes down.
Why I Love These Island Events
These aren’t staged or commercial, they’re real, joyful parts of Kaua‘i life. They remind us to:
• Celebrate community and culture
• Support local farmers and artists
• Slow down and savor the moment
And best of all… they’re free to attend and open to all.
If you’re visiting Kaua‘i, consider adding one (or all) of these events to your itinerary. You’ll leave with more than souvenirs — you’ll leave with stories.
