Grilling with Rum: Easy Tips for Island-Inspired Flavor!
Sizzle, Splash, Savor—Bring the Islands to Your Backyard
Ready to take your grilling game to the next level? Whether you’re cooking for family or friends, adding a splash of Kōloa Rum is the secret to creating mouthwatering dishes with a tropical twist.
These tips are straight from my new book, The Island Spirit: The Ultimate Guide to Rum-Infused Cocktails and Cuisine, which will be available June 2025. Until then, here’s a sneak peek to bring a little more aloha to your backyard grill:
1. Misting Magic
Pour Kōloa White or Gold Rum into a misting bottle and lightly spray your meats or seafood before searing (always away from an open flame).
The alcohol helps enhance caramelization, and the cane sugar base of Kōloa Rum adds a beautifully subtle flavor.
🟠 Best with: Chicken thighs, pork chops, seafood or pineapple slices.
2. Flavorful Skewers
Soak wooden skewers in water for 1 hour, then finish by soaking them in Coconut rum for 10–15 minutes before grilling.
This prevents burning and gives your meats and fruits a gentle rum-kissed aroma.
🟠 Best with: Shrimp, bell peppers, pineapple chunks, or sausage bites.
3. Rum-Infused Smoke
Soak wood chips (like hickory or applewood) in Kōloa Dark Rum for 30 minutes. Let them dry completely, then toss onto the coals or smoker box.
As they smoke, they’ll infuse your dish with complex, sweet-savory depth.
🟠 Best with: Pork ribs, brisket, and hearty vegetables like mushrooms or squash.
4. Rum-Basted Corn on the Cob
Baste fresh corn with a mix of melted butter, Kōloa Gold Rum, and a pinch of salt while grilling.
The sugars in the rum caramelize on the grill, adding a rich, slightly smoky finish.
🟠 Best with: A sprinkle of chili-lime seasoning or grated cotija cheese to finish.
