Some cocktails whisk you away to the tropics. The Bahama Mama goes even further, it layers the experience threefold. With every sip, you get a burst of sun-ripened citrus, a hint of lush island sweetness, and a smooth, warming depth that makes it linger in all the best ways. It’s no wonder this vibrant drink has held its place as a beach bar favorite for generations.

At its heart, the Bahama Mama is a beautifully balanced cocktail. A Little History

Every great cocktail carries a story, and the Bahama Mama is no exception. While its exact beginnings are a little fuzzy, most tales trace it back to the Caribbean in the 1950s. Some say it was first poured in Nassau, named after a beloved calypso singer who went by “Bahama Mama.”

Wherever it began, the drink has always been about more than just what’s in the glass. It’s a reflection of warm nights, ocean breezes, and the joy of slowing down. That’s why, decades later, it still feels like a sip of vacation — layered, lively, and endlessly fun.


Why Three Rums?

The magic of a truly great Bahama Mama isn’t just in the fruit, it’s in the way the rums come together. Dark, coconut, and white rum each bring their own personality to the glass, and when they’re layered, the result is pure tropical harmony.

Bottled lime juice can work in a pinch, but if you can, grab a couple of limes and juice them yourself. It adds brightness and a little tang that keeps the drink feeling crisp and refreshing.

Same goes for orange juice. Fresh-squeezed brings a subtle zestiness you won’t get from boxed blends. But don’t stress, use what you have, and enjoy every sip.


Glass + Ice Note:

The Bahama Mama is traditionally served in a tall hurricane or tiki-style glass over plenty of ice, cubed or crushed. The ice helps mellow the layered rums and keep things cool and refreshing from the first sip to the last.

Mixology Tip: For best results, use clean, solid ice cubes. Hollow or fast-melting ice may dilute the drink too quickly and mute its tropical flavor. If you want extra flair, crushed ice works too, just expect a slightly faster melt and a bit more dilution.
